Title: Icelandic and Old Norse Collection

Description: The University of Nottingham library contains a range of material relating to the study of Icelandic language, literature and culture and Viking Studies. These materials are housed in the Library's main Humanities area on Level 4 of the Hallward Library, in the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections at King's Meadow Campus, and in the closed-access Central Store. Together they constitute the Icelandic and Old Norse Collection.

Strength: The collection has benefited by the addition in 1999 of the library of Eiríkur Benedikz, which includes a unique collection of Old Icelandic rímur. Eiríkur Benedikz's collection has been increased by further donations from his son, Ben Benedikz. Earlier important donations of Old Norse include books and papers bequeathed in 1967 by Nottingham alumnus Noel Grudgings.

Accrual status: Selective, to support research and teaching within the University. Purchase and deposit. Periodic.

Access control: Certain items within the collection are for reference only. Items from the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections may be consulted only in the Department's Reading Room. The opening hours are listed online for the Hallward Library and the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections.
